The Premier League was founded 32 years ago and in that time we have seen some incredible football shirts (and also quite a few shockers). From the iconic shirts of the 90’s to the modern classics of the 2010’s, in this article we are going to take a look back at what we think are the greatest kits of the Premier League era. (Spoiler: we have a slight bias to 90’s kits.)
Coventry 1995-1996 Away Football Shirt
We start off our blog with a real stunner and a highly sought after shirt for classic kit hunters, the Coventry 95/96 away shirt. The jersey has a bold purple and yellow striped colour scheme coupled with a great Peugeot sponsor across the front of the shirt. Manufacturer Pony had a habit of creating countless beautiful shirts in the 1990’s and this is certainly one of them.
Chelsea 1997-1999 Home Football Shirt
Chelsea FC had a very strong run of kits in the late 90’s and we think this jersey is the best of them all. The shiny blue, white and yellow kit was worn in the season that Chelsea went on to lift the league cup trophy beating Middlesbrough 2-0 at Wembley stadium.
Manchester City 2020-2021 Away Football Shirt
Quite simply a modern classic. The City 20/21 away shirt stunned us with its beautiful design inspired by Castlefield and Bridgewater canals, according to the club these are “areas symbolic of Manchester’s past, present and future”. We are also big fans of the chosen black and copper colour scheme.
Arsenal 1991-1993 Away Football shirt
Nicknamed “the bruised banana” because of its distinctive colour scheme, this jersey was worn by Arsenal in the Premier League’s inaugural year. Unfortunately for the Gunners, they ended the season in 10th position in the league. This jersey has become extremely popular overtime and Arsenal have even released modern remakes of the jersey.
Newcastle 1995-1997 Home Football Shirt
Iconic kits almost always have iconic sponsors and for the Toon it doesn’t get more iconic than Newcastle Brown Ale! This stunning shirt was worn by Alan Shearer during the 96/97 season (his first for The Magpies) when he scored a whopping 25 goals.
Fulham 2001 - 2002 Home Football Shirt
Speaking of iconic sponsors, Fulham also had one of their own when they wore Pizza Hut across the front of their jerseys in the 01/02 home shirt. This was Fulham’s first season in the Premier League, they went on to finish a respectable 13th and reached the semi finals of the FA Cup.
Manchester United 2012-2013 Home Football Shirt
Usually when a football shirt becomes a classic you can instantly think of a player who wore it when you see it. With this jersey you could probably think of many, such as Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney or Nemanja Vidić. The fantastic checkered pattern shirt was worn in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge of United, they went on to lift the Premier League trophy for an impressive 13th time.

For the 95/96 Premier League season Adidas went crazy with some of their GK kit designs, including Liverpool’s vibrant pair of 1995-1996 GK kits. Both tops shared the same bold design, with one of the jerseys being bright yellow and orange, whilst the other was a mix of purple and turquoise.
Tottenham 1991-1995 Away Football Shirt
Umbro’s 91-95 templates created some amazing looking shirts for teams such as Napoli, Everton and the Scottish national side. We think the Spurs 91-95 away shirt takes the crown above all others! This elegant, shiny yellow jersey still stands the test of time today and is a must have for serious Premier League 90’s kit collectors.
Arsenal 2005-2006 Home Football Shirt
In truth, Arsenal could have appeared on our best of list more than twice. They have arguably released more outstanding shirts than any other Premier League club since it’s foundation in 1992. The 05/06 home shirt is as good as it gets. Synonymous with Arsenal’s last season at Highbury before moving to the Emirates stadium, this outstanding maroon and gold jersey was worn by the likes of club legends such as Theirry Henry, Dennis Bergkamp and Freddie Ljungberg.
