When it comes to duos, it doesn’t come much better than football shirts and gaming sponsors. When done right, these kinds of collaborations have created some of the greatest football shirts of all time. In this blog we are going to take a look at some of our favourite ones.
Fiorentina 1997-1998 Home Football Shirt “Nintendo”
We start with arguably one of the greatest kits of all time. The beautiful purple of Fiorentina kits with a gaming company as iconic as Nintendo, who were at the height of their popularity at the time during the N64 era, makes this shirt highly sought after by classic shirt collectors. If you wanted to buy one of these long sleeve shirts yourself, you’d be looking to pay well over £300 for a good example!
Auxerre 2003-2004 Home Football Shirt “Playstation”
Auxerre are a French club currently playing in Ligue 2 and in 2001 they signed a deal with Sony to have playstation on the front of their shirts. This partnership ran until the end of the 06/07 season. The kit itself was manufactured by Kappa and had a simple white and blue template design that was perfect for the Playstation sponsorship.
Chelsea 1990-1992 Away Football Shirt “Commodore”
From 1988 to 1992, Chelsea FC had Commodore as their main kit sponsor, an electronics company from Canada who sold a games console known as the C64GS. The gaming system itself was a failure but the stunning 90/92 away shirt is far from that! With a beautiful red and white diamond pattern, we think it’s one of Chelsea’s greatest 90s jerseys.
Seattle Sounders 2018-2019 Away Football Shirt “Xbox”
A bright green kit sponsored by a company synonymous with the colour green was always going to look great. The Xbox and Seattle partnership started in 2009 and ran all the way through to the 2018-2019 season. Our pick of the bunch was this super clean away kit from the 2018-2019 season!
Arsenal 2001-2002 Away Football Shirt “SEGA”
One of the Gunners’ most famous football kits, the 01/02 away kit sponsored by SEGA is a favourite amongst collectors of classic Premier league shirts. This partnership only ran for a couple of seasons and appeared on two of the clubs away jerseys. The home version of the 2001-2002 was also sponsored by Sega advertising their Dreamcast gaming system.
Lyon 2000-2001 Third Football Shirt “Atari”
During the 00/01 season, Lyon had many promotional sponsors on their kits. These included Lion chocolate bars, the film production company Pathe and the best of all, arcade gaming company Atari. The kit’s primary colour was grey with a red and blue stripe down the middle on the Adidas’ 00/01 template jersey.
Manchester City 1999-2001 Home Football Shirts “Eidos”
Worn by the likes of Shaun Wright Phillips, Shaun Goater and Alife Haaland, this iconic Manchester City shirt was sponsored by Eidos for 2 seasons. Eidos was a British video game developer responsible for creating iconic titles such as Deus Ex, Final Fantasy VII and Tomb Raider.
