The Best England Football Shirts Of All Time

Updated: Apr 12

In this article, we will be taking a trip down memory lane and revisiting some of the best England football shirts of all time. Over the years, various manufacturers like Umbro, Admiral, and Nike have tried their hand at designing an England shirt, creating vintage classics and modern masterpieces alike. We have compiled a list of what we think are the best ones.

1. England 1990 Third Football Shirt

This shirt is arguably the greatest national team shirt ever produced. The blue diamond pattern and smart collar make it one of the most fashionable kits, and it has been reproduced countless times. The shirt was even worn by New Order frontman Bernard Sumner in the music video for their no.1 song World In Motion which they performed with the England national side.

2. England 2006 Away Football Shirt

This fan-favourite shirt was worn during the 2006 World Cup in Germany, where England made it to the quarter-finals of the competition. The golden numbers and nameset prints used for the kit were particularly stunning. Steven Gerrard finished as England’s top goal scorer in the competition with 2 goals.

3. England 1996 Home Football Shirt

The kit features a stylish navy, white, and light blue collar with a central three lions crest. This shirt reminds every England fan from the 90s of the brilliance of Paul Gascoigne, who scored one of the greatest World Cup goals of all time wearing this jersey against Scotland at Euro 96. England managed to reach the semi-finals of Euro 1996 where they lost on penalties to Germany.

4. England 2020 Away Football Shirt

Though the England 2020 away jersey was never worn by the national side during Euro 2020, we still think it is up there with some of the best England kits of all time. The design features the three lions crest patterned across the shirt in an abstract style, with a main colour of blue and large red side panels. This jersey was worn mostly during England’s World Cup Qualifiers for Qatar 2022.

5. England 1980-1983 Away Football Shirt

This shirt is over 40 years old now, but the design is still sold by the English FA as a modern remake, which is a testament to just how timeless this kit is. The shirt features a V-neck collar, with a blue and red stripe across the front, and a blue stripe across the shoulder line. The kit was worn by England during the 1982 World Cup tournament in Spain, where the side only managed to reach the second group stage of the competition.

6. England 1998 Home Football Shirt

This beautiful hit from Umbro features a similar centre crest design to the Euro 96 home shirt. The shirt features red and black side panels and a smart button-up collar. It was worn by some of England’s great footballers, including David Beckham, Rio Ferdinand, and Paul Scholes. England only managed to reach the round of 16 in the competition, after losing 4-3 on penalties to Argentina.

7. England 1996 Goalkeeper Shirt

This shirt might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we think the more outrageous the design, the better! The top features a colourful psychedelic pattern over a base colour of yellow. The long-sleeved shirt was worn primarily by legendary England goalkeeper David Seaman.

8. England 1966 Away Football Shirt

The England 1966 Away Football Shirt is an iconic piece of football history. It was famously worn during England’s only World Cup victory in 1966 and is forever cemented in history. This shirt was worn by legendary players such as Sir Bobby Moore, John Charlton, and Jimmy Greaves. It’s a symbol of England’s national team’s ascendance to immortality.
